The Center was developed by Dr. Susan Kaplowitz in 2001. She has an undergraduate degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York and a Masters and Doctoral degree from New York University. She also holds a certificate in Adult Fitness Management and Sports Medicine from Kean University. She is certified as a Personal Trainer from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and as an Older Adult Fitness Trainer from the American Institute of Fitness Education. In 2009, Dr. Kaplowitz became certified as a Master Trainer in New Jersey (one of 25) to train community coaches in the National Matter of Balance Program.
Dr. Kaplowitz is a member of the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies. She teaches Exercise and Aging, Foundations of Exercise Science and Sport Studies, and Motor Learning. She is also a Department Advisor.
Dr. Nicole Robell joined the Exercise Science and Sport Studies faculty in the fall of 2012. She teaches Exercise and Aging as well as Foundations of Exercise Science and Sport Studies. She is an alumna who graduated from Rutgers University with a B.S. in Exercise Science and Sport Studies. She received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from New York Medical College. Her Doctoral research was in the Retention of Primitive Reflexes in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Robell has developed educational and exercise based programs, and implemented them throughout the Senior Citizen Community in Middlesex County with her Exercise and Aging class. She also served as the Keynote Speaker at the North Brunswick Senior Conference in May of 2013.
Dr. Robell works full time as a Physical Therapist at the Saint Peter's Sports Medicine Institute in New Brunswick. Her specialty area is outpatient orthopedics with a manual based approach, but she has also worked with patients from pediatrics, acute care, and neurology. She educates local high school students about sport specific injury prevention through the Prevent Injury Enhance Performance (PEP) Program. She is planning on attaining her Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Certification within the next year.
