Sport Management - Agent/Law

Sports agents represent athletes in contract negotiations, endorsements, financial matters, and other business decisions. They advocate for their clients while helping manage their careers, public image, and professional opportunities. If you are interested in law, negotiation, business, and sports, becoming a sports agent can be a way to combine these interests into a career.

What Do Sports Agents Do?

  • Negotiate contracts, salaries, bonuses, and endorsements
  • Review and manage contracts and business agreements
  • Represent athletes in business and financial meetings
  • Seek sponsorship and promotional opportunities
  • Monitor clients' finances and career data
  • Develop and promote an athlete's brand
  • Recruit new athletic talent
  • Build relationships throughout the sports industry

Obtain Required Licenses & Certifications

Build a foundation in sports, business or a related field. Common choices include Sport Management, Business, Finance, or related disciplines. A Juris Doctor (JD) provides valuable preparation for the legal and business side of the sports agency. Law school develops skills in contracts, negotiation, legal research, and advocacy - all directly relevant to representing athletes. Build experience through internships and entry-level positions with sports agencies, athletic departments, law offices, or other sports organizations. Requirements vary by state, sport, and professional league. Major professional leagues may have additional certification requirements, including an advanced degree, exam, background check, and certification fee.

OTHER PATHWAYS: A JD is not universally required to work as a sports agent. Depending on the sport and career goals, some agents pursue an MBA, master's degree in sport management, or gain relevant industry and negotiating experience instead.
