Name: Andrea Banu

Graduation Year: 2017

Major: Exercise Science - Applied Kinesiology

How did you decide on your major?

I knew going into college that I wanted to become a physical therapist, so I wanted a major that would prepare me for PT school.

What was it about your chosen field (and the department) that appealed to you?

A Kinesiology and health major was the most appropriate option for me because it includes all PT school prerequisite courses and many interesting and relevant electives.

Did you have a favorite class/professor within your major?

My favorite class was Neuromechanical Kinesiology taught by Professor Manfredonia because his class was the most PT-oriented. I am learning concepts that he taught me in PT school right now! If you are a student planning on applying to PT school, take this course!

What were your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?

I was involved in research in the Exercise Psychophysiology Lab throughout my college career and contributed to many projects. During my senior year, I conducted my own independent research project and presented the results at the Aresty Research Symposium and the Kinesiology and Health Honors Talks. Working in a research lab enhanced my academic experience in ways that classes and labs couldn’t because this was where I truly learned how to think critically and work collaboratively.

What were your other Rutgers activities?

I was involved in the Rutgers Performing Dance Company for two years, played intramural sports all four years, and was a member of the Childhood Leukemia Foundation.

What are your plans after graduation?

I am currently a first year PT student at the University of Delaware.
