The Department of Kinesiology and Health prepares students for a wide range of opportunities in both the Exercise Science and Sport Management fields. Both of these areas continue to grow in scope, depth and diversity.

The desire to be fit and the public’s awareness of the importance of good health has heightened the need for trained professionals. As the population ages, the need for practitioners in the fields of medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy and wellness will continue to expand. On the other end of the age spectrum, technological advances in neonatal care and early intervention will require these same practitioners to focus on children and youth.

Increased interest in sports across all segments of the population, the growth of competitive athletics, and the development of sport-related businesses has led to a sports industry valued at approximately $498.4 billion dollars (Plunkett Research, 2016). The growth in this industry has led to many diverse career jobs in the fields of facilities management, event planning, sport finance, athletic administration, sport retailing, professional sport organization, marketing and management.

Students in the Department of Kinesiology and Health possess all of the pre-requisites needed to either apply to a Graduate Program in their chosen area of interest or move into entry level jobs as the first step in their careers. The capstone requirement for all of our majors is an internship which requires field work in a practical setting off campus. This further allows students to complete a supervised hands-on experience in their intended careers and can help them solidify their career decisions.

The twenty-first century has continued to see tremendous growth in the Department of Kinesiology and Health. At the present time, there are more than 1300 majors. Our students receive the necessary foundation and support to be ready for the challenges of the 21st century and continue to be a source of pride to our Department as they make contributions in research, healthcare, business, and science throughout the world.

New initiatives such as the Master's and Doctoral Programs in Exercise Science and a Master’s Program in Global Sport Business provide continued opportunities for majors to further their education at Rutgers University.
